Şirince - Sirince Travel Guide

Şirince - Sirince Travel Guide - or, as it used to be called, Çirkince – Selçuk – Izmir

Author: Şükrü Tül

“Every farmer was master of his own land. Everyone had a two-storey house, and outside also had an estate with a vegetable garden, with walnut trees, almond, apple, pear and cherry trees. And he did not forget to lay out a flower garden for his own pleasure.

And what did that cost him, since he had gushing water and leaping streams that babbled summer and winter.

When the wheat and barley were ripe, our fields looked like golden seas.

But nowhere could you find anything more splendid than our olives; they bore abundantly, their fruit was firm, shiny, black as true Arabs!

Oil was a good source of income for our village; but the village purse also filled with gold pounds thanks to the figs, which were famous not only in the little town of Aydın but throughout Anatolia, in Europe and America.

Thin-skinned, silky figs, full of sugar, with golden juice like honey, with all the fire and sweetness of Anatolia…”

Şirince, a village in Turkey formerly known as Çirkince, is a popular tourist destination. The name Çirkince, which means "ugly" in Turkish, was deliberately chosen to deter visitors, while today's name Şirince means "nice" or "pretty".

History: The village has a long history and was once a Greek-speaking stronghold, inhabited before the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922.

Change of name: In 1926 the name was changed from Çirkince to Şirince to reflect the friendly and picturesque character of the place.

Economic development: Originally agriculture, especially the cultivation of olives and peaches, was the main source of income. Today tourism is the most important industry, with many houses converted into restaurants, hotels and shops.

Sights: Visitors can admire the restored old Greek houses, the abandoned 19th-century Greek Orthodox church and the vineyards and peach trees.

Other special features: Şirince is known for its unique black mulberry seed wine and herbal products such as lavender tea and sage.

Item features:
