Why Wittenberg?

From Wittenberg, the Reformation changed Europe. In 1517 Martin Luther published his 95 Theses against the sale of indulgences here, and he taught at Wittenberg University together with Philip Melanchthon. The painter Lucas Cranach the Elder also worked in the town and portrayed Luther and his companions. Luther and Melanchthon are buried in the Castle Church. Together with those in Eisleben, the Luther Memorials in Wittenberg have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Route

  • Luther House (UNESCO)
The former Augustinian monastery was Luther's home with his family. Today it is a major museum on the history of the Reformation.
  • Melanchthon House (UNESCO)
The home of the humanist and reformer Philip Melanchthon, Luther's closest companion.
  • St. Mary's Town Church (UNESCO)
Luther's preaching church, where services were first held in German. It is famous for the Reformation Altar from the Cranach workshop.
  • Market Square and Town Hall
The Renaissance market square with the town hall and the monuments to Luther and Melanchthon.
  • Cranach Courtyards
The home and workshop buildings of Lucas Cranach the Elder, who painted, printed and even ran a pharmacy here.
  • Castle Church (UNESCO)
The 95 Theses are said to have been posted on its door – today the bronze Theses Door commemorates this. The graves of Luther and Melanchthon are here.
  • Optional: Asisi Panorama
