Why Trier?
Trier was founded around 16 BC as Augusta Treverorum and is considered Germany's oldest city. In late antiquity it was one of the residences of the Roman emperors, and Constantine the Great held court here on the Moselle. No other place north of the Alps preserves so many large Roman buildings. Since 1986 the Roman monuments, the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trier is also the birthplace of Karl Marx.
Route
- Porta Nigra (UNESCO)
This 2nd-century Roman city gate is Trier's landmark. It was converted into a church in the Middle Ages – which is why it survived. - Hauptmarkt
The medieval market square with its market cross, St. Peter's Fountain and the Steipe, the former banqueting and council house of the citizens. - Trier Cathedral (UNESCO)
Germany's oldest cathedral, built on a Roman core. It houses the Holy Robe (Heiliger Rock). - Church of Our Lady (UNESCO)
Right next to the cathedral – one of the earliest Gothic churches in Germany, built on a cross-shaped plan. - Basilica of Constantine and Electoral Palace
Emperor Constantine's early 4th-century palace hall, today a Protestant church, alongside the Rococo Electoral Palace and its gardens. - Imperial Baths (UNESCO)
The ruins of the late Roman bath complex with underground passages that convey the scale of the imperial residence. - Optional: Amphitheatre or Karl Marx House
Depending on your interests, the Roman amphitheatre on the Petrisberg or Karl Marx's birthplace in Brückenstraße.
