Why Stralsund and Wismar?
In the Middle Ages Stralsund and Wismar were important members of the Hanseatic League and grew wealthy through Baltic trade. Monumental churches, town halls and merchants' houses in the Brick Gothic style still bear witness to this today. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 both towns came under Swedish rule, which left its mark on their townscape and local memory. Since 2002 the Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar have jointly been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Route
- Old Market Square and Stralsund Town Hall
The splendid show façade of the Gothic town hall is one of the best-known Brick Gothic buildings on the Baltic coast. - St. Nicholas Church, Stralsund
The council church right next to the town hall, with rich medieval furnishings. Admission may not be included. - Stralsund Harbour
The harbour island with old warehouses, the sailing ship Gorch Fock (I) and the Ozeaneum (optional, admission not included). - Wismar Market Square and Wasserkunst
One of the largest market squares in northern Germany, with the Dutch Renaissance Wasserkunst fountain house and the “Alter Schwede” merchant's house. - Wismar's Brick Churches
The soaring St. Nicholas Church, St. George's Church and the surviving tower of St. Mary's Church shape the town's skyline. - Wismar Old Harbour
The historic harbour with the Water Gate and the Baumhaus – a lovely finale with a view of the water. - Optional: Fish Roll at the Harbour
To round off the day, you can try a fish roll straight from a fishing boat in Wismar's Old Harbour.
