Why Regensburg?
Regensburg looks back on almost two thousand years of history. Around AD 179 the Romans built the legionary fortress Castra Regina here, and its northern gate still survives today. In the Middle Ages Regensburg was one of the wealthiest trading cities in southern Germany, as its patrician towers and the Stone Bridge show. From 1663 to 1806 the Perpetual Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire met in the Old Town Hall. Since 2006 the Old Town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Route
- Stone Bridge
Built across the Danube in the 12th century, the bridge is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval engineering and offers a fine view of the old town. - Historic Sausage Kitchen and Danube Riverbank
The traditional sausage kitchen right next to the bridge and a stroll along the Danube with a view across to Stadtamhof. - Regensburg Cathedral of St. Peter
Bavaria's principal Gothic church with two delicate spires and magnificent medieval stained-glass windows. - Porta Praetoria
The remains of the northern gate of the Roman fortress Castra Regina are among the most important Roman structures north of the Alps. - Old Town Hall and Imperial Hall
The Perpetual Imperial Diet met here from 1663 to 1806. The Imperial Hall can be visited on a guided tour; admission not included. - Patrician Houses and Golden Tower
Medieval residential towers of wealthy merchant families, inspired by Italian models, shape the townscape. - Optional: St. Emmeram Palace
