Why Potsdam?

For centuries Potsdam was a residence and garrison town of the Hohenzollern dynasty. From 1745 Frederick the Great had his summer palace Sanssouci built here, and it became his favourite place. The palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. In the summer of 1945, Cecilienhof Palace hosted the Potsdam Conference, where the victorious Allies discussed the post-war order for Germany. With the Dutch Quarter and its rebuilt historic centre, Potsdam also offers a lively townscape.

Route

  • Sanssouci Palace (UNESCO)
Frederick the Great's summer palace above the famous vineyard terraces. His grave lies nearby. Admission not included.
  • Sanssouci Park
An extensive landscape park with the Picture Gallery, the New Chambers, the Chinese House and the Orangery Palace – perfect for a long stroll.
  • New Palace
Frederick the Great had this monumental palace at the western end of the park built after the Seven Years' War.
  • Brandenburg Gate and Dutch Quarter
Potsdam's own Brandenburg Gate and the quarter of red-brick houses built in the 18th century for Dutch craftsmen.
  • Old Market Square and St. Nicholas Church
The historic centre with St. Nicholas Church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Old Town Hall and the rebuilt City Palace.
  • New Garden and Cecilienhof Palace
The last palace built by the Hohenzollerns hosted the Potsdam Conference in 1945. A view of the Heiliger See completes the visit.
  • Optional: Glienicke Bridge
The bridge between Potsdam and Berlin became known during the Cold War as a place where spies were exchanged.
