Why Lübeck?
Founded in 1143, Lübeck quickly became the leading city of the Hanseatic League, the powerful alliance of North German merchants and towns around the Baltic Sea. Most of the Hanseatic Diets were held here, and Lübeck law was adopted by numerous towns along the Baltic. With its church spires, gabled houses and warehouses, the old town is a prime example of Brick Gothic and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Lübeck is also linked to three Nobel laureates: Thomas Mann, Willy Brandt and Günter Grass.
Route
- Holsten Gate & Salt Storehouses
The late Gothic city gate from the 15th century is Lübeck's landmark. Next to it stand the salt storehouses, reminders of the once lucrative salt trade. - St. Peter's Church & view of the old town
The former parish church is now a venue for culture and exhibitions. The tower, accessible by lift, offers a view over the old town island (admission not included). - Town Hall & Market Square
One of the oldest town halls in Germany, with a striking show façade and a Renaissance loggia – seat of city government since the Middle Ages. - St. Mary's Church
The "mother church of Brick Gothic" served as a model for many churches around the Baltic. In the south tower, the bells that crashed down in 1942 recall the Second World War. - Buddenbrook House & Mengstraße
The Mann family house, setting of Thomas Mann's novel "Buddenbrooks". Your guide tells you about Lübeck's literary history. - Koberg, Holy Spirit Hospital & passageways
One of the oldest social institutions in Europe, dating from the 13th century. In the hidden passageways and courtyards you experience quiet Lübeck away from the main streets. - Optional: European Hansemuseum
The museum at the Castle Friary brings the history of the Hanseatic League vividly to life (admission not included).
