Why Leipzig?
For centuries Leipzig was shaped by trade: the Leipzig Trade Fair is considered one of the oldest in the world and made the city a hub between East and West. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote music history here as Thomaskantor from 1723 until his death in 1750; Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Schumann and Wagner are also linked to Leipzig. In 1813 the Battle of the Nations against Napoleon was fought just outside the city. In 1989 the peace prayers at St. Nicholas Church gave rise to the Monday demonstrations that contributed to the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR.
Route
- St. Thomas Church
Where Johann Sebastian Bach worked and home of the St. Thomas Boys Choir. Bach's tomb lies in the chancel, and the Bach monument stands outside. - Market Square & Old Town Hall
The 16th-century Renaissance town hall dominates the market square and today houses the city history museum. - Mädler Passage & Auerbachs Keller
The elegant shopping arcade reflects Leipzig's trade fair tradition. Goethe set a scene of his "Faust" in Auerbachs Keller. - St. Nicholas Church
Starting point of the peace prayers and Monday demonstrations of 1989. Its neoclassical interior with palm-like columns is unique. - Augustusplatz & University
Large square with the opera house, the Gewandhaus and the new university building recalling the University Church demolished in 1968. - Monument to the Battle of the Nations
Monumental structure from 1913 commemorating the battle of 1813. The viewing platform offers views over the city (admission not included). - Optional: Bach Museum or Forum of Contemporary History
Depending on your interests, delve deeper into Bach's life and work or the history of division and reunification (admission not included).
