Why Konstanz?
For more than a thousand years Konstanz was the seat of one of the largest dioceses in the German-speaking world. The city made world history with the Council of Constance from 1414 to 1418: here in 1417 Martin V, the only pope elected north of the Alps, was chosen, ending the Western Schism, and here in 1415 the reformer Jan Hus was burned at the stake. Because Konstanz lies directly on the Swiss border, its old town was largely spared from bombing in the Second World War. Off the city lies the monastic island of Reichenau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
Route

The former cathedral with a Romanesque core, Gothic additions and crypt; tower ascent optional. - Niederburg
The city's oldest quarter with narrow lanes, historic houses and small wine taverns. - Rhine Gate Tower & Rhine Waterfront
A surviving tower of the city walls at the point where the Rhine leaves Lake Constance. - Marktstätte & Rosgarten Museum
The lively old-town square and the city museum in the former butchers' guild hall; museum visit optional. - Optional: Monastic Island of Reichenau (UNESCO)
The island with its three Romanesque churches and the famous Ottonian wall paintings in St. George's, Oberzell.
