Why Cologne?
Cologne is one of the oldest cities in Germany. In 50 AD the Roman settlement was granted city status as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. In the Middle Ages Cologne was one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Empire and a major pilgrimage destination, above all because of the relics of the Three Kings. Cologne Cathedral, begun in 1248 and only completed in 1880, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Twelve large Romanesque churches still shape the city centre today.
Route
- Cologne Cathedral (UNESCO)
Gothic cathedral whose construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880. Inside: the Shrine of the Three Kings, medieval stained glass and the Gero Cross. - Cathedral surroundings & Roman traces
