Why Heidelberg?

Heidelberg is home to the oldest university in present-day Germany, founded in 1386 by Elector Rupert I. For centuries the Electors Palatine resided here; their castle was destroyed in the Nine Years' War at the end of the 17th century. The ruin above the Neckar valley became an emblem of Romanticism, attracting poets and painters such as Goethe, Eichendorff and William Turner. The old town, rebuilt in baroque style, was largely spared in the Second World War.

Route

  • Heidelberg Castle
The famous Gothic and Renaissance ruin above the town, with the Ottheinrich Building, castle gardens and the Great Tun; courtyard and tun optional (admission not included).
  • Kornmarkt & Funicular
The square with its Madonna statue and castle view; on request up or down by funicular.
  • Market Square & Church of the Holy Spirit
The heart of the old town with the town hall, Hercules Fountain and the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, once the burial place of the Electors.
  • Haus zum Ritter
One of the few Renaissance townhouses to have survived the destruction of the 17th century.
  • Old University & Student Prison
University Square, the Old Assembly Hall and the prison where students once served their detention – with graffiti on the walls; prison optional.
  • Old Bridge
The Karl Theodor Bridge with its gate and the bridge monkey – and the classic view of the old town and castle.
  • Optional: Philosophers' Walk
The path on the opposite slope with the finest panorama over the Neckar, the old town and the castle.
