Why Eisleben?
Eisleben is where the reformer's life began and ended: Martin Luther was born here on 10 November 1483 and died here on 18 February 1546. Since 1996 his birth house and death house, together with the Luther Memorials in Wittenberg, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For centuries the town was shaped by copper shale mining in the Mansfeld region. Since 1946 it has officially been named 'Lutherstadt Eisleben'.
Route
- Luther's Birth House (UNESCO)
The house where Luther was born in 1483 is one of the oldest museums in the German-speaking world. An exhibition presents Luther's family and life around 1500 (admission not included). - St. Peter and Paul's Church
Luther was baptised in this church the day after his birth. Today it is designed as a 'Baptism Centre' with a baptismal font set into the floor. - Market Square with Luther Monument
Rudolf Siemering's Luther Monument stands in front of the town hall at the heart of the old town. - St. Andrew's Church
From the pulpit of this late-Gothic main church, Luther preached his last sermons shortly before his death. - Luther's Death House (UNESCO)
This museum on Andreaskirchplatz recalls Luther's last days in 1546; its exhibition explores dying and death in the Reformation era (admission not included). - St. Anne's Church
This church in Eisleben's Neustadt belonged to an Augustinian monastery and is known for its 16th-century stone picture Bible. - Optional: Old Town Walk
A stroll through the lanes of the old town with its townhouses and a look at traces of mining history in the Mansfeld region.
