Why Dresden?

For centuries Dresden was the residence of the Saxon electors and kings. Under Augustus the Strong, magnificent baroque buildings such as the Zwinger were created in the 18th century, earning the city the nickname 'Florence on the Elbe'. In February 1945 air raids destroyed large parts of the city centre. The reconstruction of the Frauenkirche, consecrated in 2005, became a symbol of reconciliation. Today the art collections, the Semperoper and the Elbe panorama attract visitors from all over the world.

Route

  • Frauenkirche and Neumarkt
George Bähr's baroque domed church was faithfully rebuilt after its destruction in 1945 and consecrated in 2005. Historic townhouses have been recreated around the Neumarkt.
  • Procession of Princes
This mural, over 100 metres long and made of Meissen porcelain tiles, depicts the rulers of the House of Wettin as a mounted procession.
  • Royal Palace
The palace of the Saxon rulers now houses museums of the State Art Collections, including the Green Vault (admission not included).
  • Catholic Court Church and Theaterplatz
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the largest church in Saxony. On Theaterplatz stands the Semperoper, the opera house designed by Gottfried Semper.
  • Zwinger
The baroque complex with the Crown Gate, the Nymphs' Bath and pavilions houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery with Raphael's Sistine Madonna and the Porcelain Collection.
  • Brühl's Terrace
Known as the 'Balcony of Europe', the terrace high above the Elbe offers wide views of the river, the Augustus Bridge and the Neustadt.
  • Optional: Neustadt or Museum Visit
A detour across the Augustus Bridge to the Golden Rider and the Inner Neustadt, or a visit to the Green Vault or the Picture Gallery (admission not included).
