Why Cochem?
Cochem lies picturesquely in a bend of the Moselle between steep vineyards. Above the town rises the Reichsburg, whose origins go back to the Middle Ages and which was destroyed by French troops in 1689. In the 19th century the Berlin industrialist Louis Ravené had it rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The old town with its narrow lanes, town gates and half-timbered houses reflects its past as an administrative seat of the Electorate of Trier. Wine-growing still shapes life on the Moselle today.
Route
- Cochem Imperial Castle
The castle above the town was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. Its rooms display furniture and art from the Renaissance and baroque periods; admission is not included. - Market Square and Old Town Hall
The market square with the baroque town hall and St. Martin's Fountain is the heart of the old town, framed by half-timbered and slate houses. - Old Town Lanes and Gates
Narrow lanes lead to remains of the town fortifications such as the Endert Gate, recalling Cochem's time as a fortified town. - Capuchin Monastery
The 17th-century monastery on the slope above the old town now serves as a cultural centre and offers a fine view of the town and river. - Historic Mustard Mill
In this small mill, mustard is still made the traditional way, offering an insight into a typical regional craft. - Moselle Promenade
A walk along the riverbank with views of the vineyards, the Moselle bridge and the district of Cond on the opposite bank. - Optional: Chairlift or Moselle Boat Trip
A chairlift ride up to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint or a short boat trip on the Moselle (costs not included).
