Why Celle?
For centuries Celle was the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg from the House of Guelph. The palace and its 17th-century theatre recall this courtly era. With several hundred preserved half-timbered houses, the old town is one of the most intact half-timbered ensembles in northern Germany. The Danish queen Caroline Matilda also spent her final years here. To this day, Celle combines royal history and burgher architecture within a compact centre.
Route
- Celle Ducal Palace
The Guelph palace with Renaissance and baroque features was the seat of the Dukes of Celle. Part of it now houses a museum on the history of the residence. - Palace Theatre
The 17th-century baroque theatre inside the palace is regarded as one of the oldest theatres in Germany still in use. - St. Mary's Town Church
The town's main church holds the burial vault of the Dukes of Celle. Its tower can be climbed at certain times. - Old Town Hall and Market Square
The town hall with its Weser Renaissance gable dominates the market square at the heart of the old town. - Hoppener Haus and Half-Timbered Lanes
Built in 1532, the Hoppener Haus is one of Celle's most splendid half-timbered buildings. A stroll through Zöllnerstraße, Neue Straße and Kalandgasse reveals carvings and inscriptions. - Celle Synagogue
Dating from the 18th century, it is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in northern Germany and recalls the town's Jewish history. - Optional: French Garden or Bomann Museum
A walk through the baroque garden with the monument to Caroline Matilda, or a visit to the Bomann Museum of cultural and regional history.
