Why Berlin?

Few cities reflect German history as densely as Berlin. As the residence of the Prussian kings and, from 1871, capital of the German Empire, it grew into a metropolis. Divided after the Second World War, the city was split by the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989. Since reunification in 1990 Berlin has again been the capital of Germany, and since 1999 the seat of the Bundestag. Museum Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

Route

  • Reichstag Building
Seat of the German Bundestag with Norman Foster's walk-in glass dome. Visiting the dome requires prior online registration.
  • Brandenburg Gate and Pariser Platz
The neoclassical gate of 1791 was a symbol of division and is today a landmark of unity.
  • Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Peter Eisenman's field of stelae commemorates the victims of the Holocaust; an information centre lies beneath it.
  • Gendarmenmarkt
One of Berlin's most beautiful squares with the Konzerthaus and the German and French Churches.
  • Unter den Linden and Museum Island (UNESCO)
Along the grand boulevard to Museum Island with Berlin Cathedral, the Altes Museum and the Pergamon Museum. Museum visits optional for an admission fee.
  • Checkpoint Charlie
The former crossing point between the American and Soviet sectors, today a place of remembrance of the Cold War.
  • Optional: Berlin Wall Memorial or East Side Gallery
A preserved section of the border strip on Bernauer Straße, or the longest surviving stretch of the Wall with artworks along the Spree.
