Why Bayreuth?

In the 18th century Margravine Wilhelmine, favourite sister of Frederick the Great, turned Bayreuth into a brilliant centre of art and culture. The New Palace, the Hermitage and the Margravial Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, all date from this period. In the 19th century Richard Wagner settled in Bayreuth and built the Festival Theatre, where the first Bayreuth Festival was held in 1876. Every summer music lovers from all over the world still make their way to the Green Hill.

    One of the best-preserved Baroque theatres in Europe, with a magnificent interior made of wood and canvas. Visit for an admission fee.
  • Maximilianstraße and Old Palace
    The central market street of the city centre with the Old Palace and townhouses from the margraves' era.
  • New Palace
    Residence of Margravine Wilhelmine with rooms in the distinctive Bayreuth Rococo style (admission fee).
  • Court Garden (Hofgarten)
    The extensive park behind the New Palace invites a quiet stroll.
  • Haus Wahnfried – Richard Wagner Museum
    Wagner's home with a museum on the composer's life and work; his grave lies in the garden (admission fee).
  • Festival Theatre on the Green Hill
    The opera house initiated by Wagner and built specifically for performances of his works. Exterior visit; interior tours subject to availability.
  • Optional: The Hermitage
    Baroque park and palace complex on the edge of town with the Old Palace, Temple of the Sun and fountains.

How do I pay?

30 % deposit at booking (PayPal or credit card), the balance in cash on the day of the tour.

What is the cancellation policy?

No free cancellation: up to 30 days before 30 %, 29–15 days 50 %, 14–7 days 75 %, 6–1 days and no-show 100 %. Changes of date are also subject to a fee.

Can we join with a pushchair or wheelchair?

  • Balance payable in cash on the day of the tour.
  • Cancellation fees: 365 to 30 days before 30%, 29–15 days 50%, 14–7 days 75%, 6–1 days before and in case of no-show 100%.
  • A fee is charged for changes to bookings.

  • Tours ending after 19:00 are subject to a 50% surcharge on the guiding fee.
  • Bookings can be made up to 48 hours before the start of the tour. At shorter notice, we will first check whether a guide is available and get back to you immediately.
