Why Bamberg?
Bamberg owes its rise to Emperor Henry II, who founded a bishopric here in 1007 and is buried in the cathedral with his wife Kunigunde. For centuries the prince-bishops shaped the city, which remained largely undamaged in the Second World War. As a result, an exceptionally intact old town with medieval and Baroque character has survived. Since 1993 the Town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bamberg is also known for its brewing tradition, above all its smoked beer (Rauchbier).
Route
- Old Town Hall
Built on an artificial island in the Regnitz, with colourful façade paintings and a half-timbered annex – the city's most famous photo motif. - Little Venice
A row of former fishermen's houses on the Regnitz with small gardens and balconies, best seen from the opposite bank. - Cathedral Square and Bamberg Cathedral
The four-towered Imperial Cathedral holds the tomb of Henry II and Kunigunde, the only papal tomb north of the Alps and the famous Bamberg Horseman. - Old Court (Alte Hofhaltung)
The former bishop's palace next to the cathedral with a picturesque courtyard and half-timbered galleries. - New Residence with Rose Garden
Baroque palace of the prince-bishops; the Rose Garden offers a lovely view over the rooftops of the old town (state rooms for an admission fee). - Michaelsberg Abbey
Former Benedictine monastery on one of the seven hills with views of the city and cathedral. - Optional: Sandstraße and a brewery tavern
End the day in lively Sandstraße with a chance to try Bamberg's typical smoked beer (not included in the price).
