Why Aachen?

Aachen is where European history was made. Charlemagne made the city the centre of his empire and died here in 814. Between 936 and 1531 some 30 German kings were crowned in Aachen. Today the cathedral, thermal springs among the hottest in Central Europe, the famous Aachener Printen gingerbread and the closeness to Belgium and the Netherlands give the city a unique atmosphere.

Route

  • Aachen Cathedral (UNESCO)
In 1978 the first German monument on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Carolingian octagon, Charlemagne's marble throne, the Barbarossa chandelier and the golden Shrine of Charlemagne.

  • Katschhof and Town Hall
Built in the 14th century on the foundations of Charlemagne's palace hall; the coronation banquets were held in the Coronation Hall.
  • Market Square and Karlsbrunnen
