Perge and Aspendos

Two highlights of Pamphylia in one day: in Perge we pass through the Hellenistic city gate and walk the colonnaded street once used by Paul and Barnabas. In Aspendos we sit in a Roman theatre that is still complete and still used for performances.

Full description

Perge was one of the most important cities of Pamphylia. Paul and Barnabas came here on their first missionary journey and preached in the city on their way back. We walk through the Roman and Hellenistic gates, across the agora and along the long colonnaded street with its water channel to the nymphaeum, and visit the stadium.

In Aspendos the theatre built by the architect Zeno in the 2nd century awaits us – stage building, tiers and gallery are preserved as nowhere else. On request we drive to the Roman aqueduct that carried water over many kilometres into the city.

• Comfortable shoes and sun protection – Ancient sites and old-town lanes have uneven paving and little shade; please bring water in summer.
