Across the Taurus mountains we drive to Yalvaç and the excavations of Pisidian Antioch. Here Paul gave his first great recorded sermon in the synagogue, and here he turned explicitly to the Gentiles for the first time.

Highlights

  • Site of Paul's synagogue sermon (Acts 13:14–52)
  • Church of St Paul, one of the earliest basilicas of Asia Minor
  • Temple of Augustus, Tiberius square and city gate
  • Aqueduct and theatre of the Roman colony
  • Drive across the Taurus with mountain lakes

Full description

Pisidian Antioch was a Roman colony for veterans on the Via Sebaste. Paul and Barnabas came here from Perge; on the Sabbath Paul spoke in the synagogue, and on the following Sabbath almost the whole city gathered. After opposition arose they moved on to Iconium.

We walk through the city gate along the main street to the Temple of Augustus and the large Church of St Paul, whose foundations date from the 4th century, and see the aqueduct. On request we visit the museum in Yalvaç. The drive takes about 3 hours each way.
