Terrace House 2 in Ephesus

Author: Sabine Ladstatter

2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Terrace House 2 in Ephesus. Since its discovery, and above all since it became accessible through the construction of the modern protective roof, the Roman residential houses in the centre of the ancient city of Ephesus have developed into a true attraction.

In my capacity as a long-standing member of the Austrian Ephesus excavation and, since 2009, as Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and also head of the excavation, it has been and remains a pleasure for me every time to acquaint interested visitors with this unique monument of Roman domestic culture. This companion through Terrace House 2 has grown out of my many guided tours and lectures; it presents and explains the visible archaeological evidence, but also aims to provide the relevant background information. Since a handy guide naturally cannot include every detail, I have taken my cue from the questions you asked me during visits to the Terrace House.

May I recommend that you open the “Tour of Terrace House 2” during your visit to the ruins. All the other chapters are so richly illustrated that they will hopefully also make interesting reading in other places or at a later time.

In order to leave as few questions open as possible, a glossary of the most important technical terms can be found at the end of the volume. The numbering of the rooms follows the order assigned during the excavation. Sabine Ladstatter
