Knidos Travel Guide

Author: Christine Bruns-Özgan

The city area of Knidos is a still relatively unexplored site on the west coast of Türkiye. Its charm lies not only in the landscape with its volcanic rocks and in places untouched vegetation, or in the mild climate with cool breezes even in high summer. Because of its special location at the very tip of a long peninsula, it can only be reached with some effort via the modern road - most visitors therefore prefer the sea route. But those who make the journey drive alternately through pine forests, red-and-black rocks of solidified lava and extensive almond and olive plantations, which form the livelihood of the region. After the last stage, which already leads through the city's necropolis, a unique view opens up over the terraces and harbours of Knidos. It is thanks to this remote, island-like location off the usual tourist routes that large parts of the ruins and their surroundings still appear relatively natural despite increased excavation activity in recent years.

This little book is intended to help visitors find their way around this truly important site. For this reason, an attempt has been made to present the monuments already excavated vividly for both laypeople and specialists. The order of the buildings described follows the suggested tour; areas that are more difficult to reach and require time, such as the large theatre, the sanctuary of the Muses and the necropolis, have therefore only been briefly mentioned.

For the new edition of this guide, revisions have been made and the results of the latest excavation campaigns have been integrated

Şirince - Sirince Travel Guide

Or, as it used to be called, Çirkince – Selçuk – Izmir

Author: Şükrü Tül

“Every farmer was master of his own land. Each had a two-storey house, and outside also had a property with a vegetable garden, with walnut trees, almond, apple, pear and cherry trees. And he did not forget to lay out a flower garden for his own pleasure.

And what did that cost him, since he had bubbling water and leaping streams that babbled summer and winter alike.

When the wheat and barley were ripe, our fields resembled golden seas.

But nowhere could one find anything more splendid than our olives; they bore abundantly, their fruits were firm, shiny, black as true Arabs!

A good source of income for our village was the oil; but the village purse also filled with gold pounds thanks to the figs, which were famous not only in the little town of Aydin but throughout Anatolia, in Europe and America.

Thin-skinned, silky figs, full of sugar, with golden juice like honey, with all the fire and sweetness of Anatolia…”

Şirince, a village in Türkiye formerly known as Çirkince, is a popular tourist destination. The name Çirkince, which means "ugly" in Turkish, was deliberately chosen to deter visitors, while today's name Şirince means "nice" or "pretty".

History: The village has a long history and was once a Greek-speaking stronghold, inhabited before the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922.

Change of name: In 1926 the name was changed from Çirkince to Şirince to reflect the friendly and picturesque character of the place.

Economic development: Originally agriculture, in particular the cultivation of olives and peaches, was the main source of income. Today tourism is the most important industry, with many houses having been converted into restaurants, hotels and shops.

Sights: Visitors can admire the restored old Greek houses, the abandoned 19th-century Greek Orthodox church and the vineyards and peach trees.

Other special features: Şirince is known for its unique black mulberry wine and herbal products such as lavender tea and sage.

Terrace House 2 in Ephesus

Author: Sabine Ladstatter

2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Terrace House 2 in Ephesus. Since its discovery, and above all since it became accessible through the construction of the modern protective structure, the Roman residential houses in the centre of the ancient city of Ephesus have become a true attraction.

In my capacity as a long-standing member of the Austrian Ephesus excavation and, since 2009, as Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute and also head of excavations, it has always been and still is a pleasure for me to introduce interested visitors to this unique monument of Roman domestic culture. This companion to Terrace House 2 arose from my many tours and lectures; it presents and explains the visible archaeological evidence but also aims to provide the relevant background information. Since of course not every detail can be included in a handy guide, I have based it on the questions you asked me during visits to the Terrace House.

May I recommend that you open the »Tour of Terrace House 2« during your visit to the ruins. All other chapters are so richly illustrated that they will hopefully also make interesting reading in other places or at a later time.

In order to leave as few questions as possible unanswered, there is a glossary of the most important technical terms at the end of the volume. The numbering of the rooms follows the sequence assigned during the excavation. Sabine Ladstatter
